TEACHER EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Hi this is Gary Kai…Executive Director of the Hawaii Business Round Table. We have partnered with HSTA and The Hawaii Children’s Foundation to create and execute the Teacher Internship Program that provides our 1st-12-grade educators and counselors with an orientation of today’s workforce and the essential skills that students will need to be successful in college, the workplace and as good citizens.
The Hawaii Children’s Foundation has become a catalyst for bringing the private sector into the public education system to provide Middle School after-school programs. Currently, only 26 of the 52 Middle Schools in the Hawaii Department of Education have such programs. The goal is to expose teachers and students to real business partners by creating after-school curriculums that provide students with problem-solving and creative thinking skills. After a great deal of research into the after-school program need, we have chosen to focus on the severely underserved 6-8th-grade sector.
We help other children related needs as they come to our attention. Examples are:
We raised $28,000 to help the families of the Waipio Little League defray travel expenses.
We are helping needy members of a local sports team purchase athletic shoes so they can participate in team sports.
